US escale Planner

Yes — and this catches Gulf–US transit passengers more than anyone else. The United States has no sterile airside transit: at every US airport you exit into federal inspection, so even a 2-hour plane-to-plane connection requires either a valid B1/B2 visa or an approved ESTA (for eligible nationalities). The C-1 transit visa category technically exists, but in practice a B1/B2 covers transit AND future trips, which is why most travelers hold it. Without a visa or ESTA the airline denies boarding at your origin gate — there is no airside workaround. ESTA costs $21 online and should be applied for at least 72 hours before departure; approval is not guaranteed and does not itself guarantee entry — the CBP officer at the port makes the final call.

Yes, if three things hold: (1) you hold a visa or ESTA and are formally admitted by CBP — leaving the airport means entering the United States, exactly like a visit; (2) your layover clears the math: layover minutes minus immigration and customs (45–90 min at the big hubs), minus TSA reclear on return (30–60 min), minus a 60-minute buffer, minus the round trip to wherever you are going — you want more than 90 minutes left to actually enjoy the exit, 30–90 minutes for a quick near-airport stop only; (3) your bags are handled: on international arrivals you must collect your checked bag, clear customs and re-drop it before you leave, and on domestic connections bags auto-transfer. If any leg fails, stay airside — a missed connection is far more expensive than a skipped excursion.

On international arrivals, yes — always, even when the bag is checked through to your final destination. The sequence at every US hub: passport control, collect your bag at the carousel, walk it through customs, then drop it at the transfer belt or connection counter immediately after customs (at JFK Terminal 4, LAX international terminal, Chicago T5, Dulles main terminal — same pattern). From there the bag flows to your domestic gate. Budget roughly 20 extra minutes for the carousel-and-redrop loop; the calculator adds it automatically when you tick a checked bag. On purely domestic connections the opposite is true: bags auto-transfer and you never see them until your final stop.

3 hours is the planning norm, and the per-airport floors in this tool reflect it: JFK 240 minutes (the immigration lines are the country’s longest and the transfer to another terminal eats time), LAX, Dulles and Miami 210, Chicago, Atlanta, DFW, SFO and Boston 180. That floor is for the connection alone — it assumes you stay airside. Leaving the airport needs the connection minimum PLUS immigration time PLUS a 60-minute buffer PLUS your round trip PLUS at least 90 enjoy-it minutes; at JFK that means an international layover of roughly 7 hours before Manhattan is a comfortable yes, which is why a 6-hour one rates a tight 95-free-minute verdict.

Worked answer, checked bag in hand: 360 minutes minus 75 for immigration and customs minus 20 for the carousel and bag re-drop minus 40 to reclear TSA minus a 60-minute buffer minus 70 for the AirTrain + LIRR round trip = 95 free minutes. That is a yes — but a tight one: you get about an hour and a half in Manhattan itself if you head straight back. With hand luggage only it rises to 115 free minutes. Practical shape of the trip: AirTrain to Jamaica, LIRR to Penn or Grand Central (~35 min each way, $11 each way), one walkable slice — Herald Square, the High Line entrance, Times Square — then return. Skip the checked bag if you can, check the LIRR timetable before you exit, and be airside again two hours before your connection.

First, know that US airports effectively close overnight: airside areas shut and clear out, so sleeping airside is usually not an option — and as an international arrival you have already cleared immigration anyway, which means you are legally in the US and free to take a hotel. The pattern that works: book a hotel with a free 24-hour airport shuttle (every hub has a strip of them), take the shuttle at night, return on the 4–5 AM shuttle, reclear TSA when your terminal opens. If your layover is 6+ daytime hours rather than a true overnight, the calculator verdict matters more than the hotel — check it before you book anything. And do not plan to nap landside in the terminal: most hubs clear the concourses.

Each hub has a genuinely free signature: JFK — Terminal 4’s live-music stage and quiet yoga room plus Jamaica Bay views from the AirTrain; LAX — the letters photo op and the plane-spotting lot on Sepulveda; Chicago O’Hare — the Butch O’Hare WWII exhibit and skywalk views from the Airport Transit System; Atlanta — riding the Plane Train across all seven concourses past rotating art exhibitions; DFW — the Skylink train’s glass-high ride over the airfield, the best free plane view in Texas; Dulles — watching A380s and 787s from the AeroTrain; SFO — the SFO Museum, the first accredited museum inside a US airport; Boston — harbor-view window walls and the 9/11 memorial; Seattle — the airfield-view satellite transit loop; Miami — live Latin music stages in Concourse D. The stay-inside verdict always surfaces your airport’s pick.

Materially, on both sides of the exit. Global Entry members clear CBP at kiosks — typically 5–15 minutes instead of the 45–90 minute bands at the busiest hubs — which directly refunds immigration time to your free-minutes budget. Membership also includes TSA PreCheck, which cuts the reclear-security side from the 30–60 minute reclear band to usually under 10 minutes. Combined, a Global Entry holder on a 6-hour JFK international layover effectively gains 60–100 minutes — enough to flip a quick-stop verdict into a comfortable Manhattan run. Alternatives if you do not have it: Mobile Passport Control (free app, now MPC-ready lanes at all ten hubs in this tool) recovers part of the immigration wait, though it does nothing for the TSA line.
