Etiquette guides say tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but most Americans run the percentage on the post-tax total because the gap is small. Worked example: a $100 dinner in New York City carries 8.875% sales tax ($8.88) — 20% pre-tax is $20.00 vs $21.78 post-tax, a $1.78 difference. Either is perfectly acceptable.

How much should I tip a bartender per drink?

The standard is $1–2 per drink in cash at the bar, or 15–20% of the tab when you close out on a card. At cocktail and craft bars lean toward $2 per drink; at a busy dive bar $1 a beer still reads as fine. If you are running a tab for the whole group, 20% at the end covers everything.

Is an automatic gratuity added for parties of 6 or more?
