Car Rental True kostnadskalkylator 2026

A 5-day economy rental at Orlando (MCO) at an advertised $38/day truly costs about $397 — not the $190 advertised: the CDW collision waiver adds $110 (your credit card may already cover it), the 11.1% airport facility fee adds $33.30, the 13.5% rental tax adds $45.00 (charged on the fee too) and fuel adds $18.44 (200 mi ÷ 32 mpg × $3/gal). That is $79.35/day true against the $38 advertised — +109% over the advertised rate, which is exactly the gap search results never show you.

Economy: $28-55 advertised. Smallest sedan tier (Kia Rio / Nissan Versa class): $28-55/day advertised. The 12-gal tank is about $35 to refill at $2.95/gal.

Advertised daily rate (before everything)

This is the number you see in search results — the bill adds add-ons, the facility fee, tax and fuel on top.

Driver age

25 or over: no young-driver fee — enter an age under 25 to see its impact.

Daily add-ons (billed per rental day)

$22/day at the counter ($110 on a 5-day rental) — often duplicated by credit-card coverage (see the honesty note).

CDW is pre-checked ($22/day) because most renters end up taking it at the counter. Honesty note: most credit cards (Visa Signature, World Mastercard, Amex) include collision coverage only when you DECLINE the counter's waiver and pay with that card — and in the US it is usually secondary coverage, excludes some classes (trucks, luxury, large SUVs) and never covers tolls, loss-of-use or admin fees. Call your card's benefits line before you fly; if covered, untick CDW here and save $22/day.
Pickup location

The airport concession recovery fee (11.1% here, 9-13% by airport) is charged on the base rate + add-ons at on-airport desks — and sales tax then applies on top of it. Off-airport branches skip it entirely.

Rental tax % (9-18%)

State + local rental taxes run 9% (low-tax states like Ohio at the band's floor) to 18% (Chicago-style stacked city taxes); the 13.5% default approximates Florida/Orlando airport rentals. The tax applies to base + add-ons + the facility fee.

Estimated trip miles (fuel at $2.95/gal)
20 mi200 mi (40 mi/day)2,000 mi

200 mi ÷ 32 mpg = 6.3 gal × $2.95 = $18.44. 2026 planning midpoint for regular gasoline near major US airports (typically $2.70-3.40 by state). Fuel is charged on your estimated miles ÷ the class mpg.

One-way drop-off?

Round-trip from the same location charges no drop fee.

The toll transponder (PlatePass / toll pass) is billed per rental DAY ($12), not per toll — a 5-day rental pays $60 even if you cross two $1.50 tolls. Bringing or activating your own pass account (E-ZPass, SunPass...) or paying the tolls online inside the payment window is nearly always cheaper.
Fuel trap: prepaid fuel (FPO) is quoted per gallon above the pump price and you buy the whole tank even if you return it half-full. Decline FPO, fill up at a station near the airport (the $2.95/gal planning figure) and keep the receipt — returning the car under-filled triggers the 'fuel service charge' at $14-30 per occurrence.
Rule of thumb: a US airport rental's true total lands 60-110% over the advertised rate once insurance, the 11.1% facility fee and taxes stack. The worked example here — $38/day economy at MCO — is $79/day true. · Off-airport branches skip the 11.1% concession fee and its tax — typically 10-15% cheaper all-in for the same car. Tradeoffs: a shuttle or short rideshare to the lot and narrower opening hours.

Vanliga frågor

Why does my US rental car bill exceed the advertised rate?

Because the advertised rate is the base only. Stacked on top: daily add-ons (collision waiver around $22, toll transponder $12), the 11.1% airport concession fee on base + add-ons, then 9-18% rental tax on that combined amount, and finally fuel. The practical outcome: an airport pickup usually lands 60-110% over advertised. Our worked example — a $38/day economy car at Orlando for 5 days — is $190 advertised but $396.73 true: $79.35/day, +109%.

Does my credit card cover rental car insurance (CDW) in the US?

Usually yes, with two conditions: you must DECLINE the counter's waiver (CDW/LDW) and pay with that card. Cards like Visa Signature, World Mastercard and Amex include collision coverage — but with honest limits: on many cards it is SECONDARY coverage in the US (it pays after your own car insurance), whole classes are excluded (pickup trucks, luxury cars, large SUVs), and it never covers loss-of-use charges, admin fees or tolls. Call your card's benefits line before you fly and get the coverage letter in writing. If covered, declining CDW saves $22/day — $110 on a 5-day rental.

How much is the young driver fee for under-25 renters?

About $30 extra per day at the major brands for drivers aged 21-24 — $150 more on a 5-day rental — and it is charged even if the young driver is only the second registered driver. Under 21, most major agencies simply will not rent to you at all (with limited exceptions for military and official travel). Credit-card coverage does not help here: the surcharge is an administrative risk fee, not insurance. This calculator switches the fee on automatically the moment you enter an age under 25.

Should I rent the toll transponder (PlatePass) from the rental company?

Usually no — it is the classic per-day trap: the transponder bills $12 for every rental DAY, not per toll. A 5-day rental pays $60 even if you cross two $1.50 tolls (under $5 of actual tolls). The alternatives: bring or activate your own pass account (E-ZPass, or SunPass in Florida), or pay the tolls online within the road's payment window. Turn the rental transponder on only when you know you will genuinely cross expensive toll roads daily (big Texas and Florida corridors).

What is the 11.1% airport facility fee on my rental bill?

The Airport Concession Recovery Fee: on-airport desks owe the airport a cut of revenue and pass it to you — roughly 9-13% depending on the airport (we use 11.1% as the national norm). The kicker: it is computed on the base rate plus your daily add-ons, and then the rental tax (9-18%) applies to the combined total including this fee — you pay tax on a fee. On a $300 base-plus-insurance subtotal that fee is $33.30 plus about $4.50 of tax on it.

What is the rental car fuel trap (fuel service charge)?

Two formats. Prepaid fuel (FPO) is quoted per gallon above pump price, but the real trap is that you buy the whole tank and return it at any level — whatever is left is a gift to the company. And returning under-filled triggers the "fuel service charge" at $14-30 per occurrence. The rule: decline prepaid fuel, fill up at a station near the airport before returning (our $2.95/gal planning figure) and keep the receipt. The calculator prices your fuel as miles ÷ class mpg × $2.95 — a full 12-gal economy tank is about $35.

Is off-airport car rental pickup actually cheaper?

Typically 10-15% cheaper on the all-in total for the same car, because off-airport branches do not charge the 11.1% concession fee — or the tax levied on top of it. On our worked example (a $300 base + add-ons subtotal) that saves about $37.80 ($33.30 fee + $4.50 tax on it). The honest tradeoffs: a shuttle or short rideshare from the terminal to the lot (usually $15-25), narrower opening hours and a smaller choice of cars. On longer rentals or pricier classes the gap grows clearly; on a one-day rental the shuttle can eat the difference.

How much are one-way rental drop fees in the US?

$75-450 charged once on top of the bill (and sometimes taxed): roughly $75-150 for in-state drops (Orlando to Miami, for example), $200-300 between neighboring states, and $300-450+ coast-to-coast — doubling during seasonal one-way rushes like late summer. Companies charge it because the car must be returned to its origin point. The workaround: renting round-trip from the same airport removes the fee entirely, and occasional free "car transfer" deals between specific branches exist — but never build a plan around them.
