Currency Exchange avgiftskalkylator

Exchanging 1,000 dollars into euros in 2026: the mid-market rate would buy €920.00, but the airport kiosk hands you €814.75 after its 11% spread and $4.95 fee — a cost of $114.41 (114.4% of your money). The bank branch (€897.09) costs $24.90, the typical card with a 3% fx fee (€887.80) costs $35, the destination ATM (€914.48) just $6 — and a credit card with no foreign-transaction fee (€915.40) costs $5, the permanent winner. The kiosk loses you $109.41 versus that card — and when any terminal offers to charge you in dollars, decline: dynamic currency conversion (DCC) adds a 5-12% markup on top of everything above.

The 8-15% spread IS the commission even when the sign screams '0% commission'; a $0-5 service fee lands on top. Reserve it for a $20-50 emergency, never the trip budget.

Does your home-bank card charge its fx fee?

Visa and Mastercard convert near the mid-market rate (0-1% spread); the only real variable is your issuer's 0-3% foreign-transaction fee. A no-fx-fee card lands near-perfect — and always pay in the LOCAL currency at the terminal.

A credit card with no foreign-transaction fee always wins — the airport kiosk loses you $109.41 on this $1,000 exchange. With the typical 3% fx fee on, your card costs $5 — the ATM ($6) is the cheapest realistic route until you get a no-fx-fee card.
The DCC trap — the worst option of 2026

At a card terminal or foreign ATM the screen may offer to charge you in US dollars instead of the local currency. That is dynamic currency conversion (DCC): the merchant's bank applies its own 5-12% exchange markup ON TOP of every cost in this calculator. Always decline and pay in the local currency — one word ('local') saves more than choosing between the methods above.

Flat fees do not scale: $6 of fees on a $100 withdrawal is 6%, on $500 it is 1.2% — withdraw large and rarely, and if the screen offers the operator's own conversion rate, decline it (that is the DCC trap again). · The kiosk takes 11.4% of this amount — the priciest route in the table.

Vanliga frågor

What does an airport currency kiosk really cost?

An 8-15% spread over the mid-market rate plus a $0-5 service fee — on $1,000 into euros that means receiving €814.75 instead of €920.00: a $114.41 bill, 11.4% of your money vanishing at the counter. Spreads run widest in less-liquid destinations. The rule: exchange only $20-50 there for an emergency and leave the rest to a card or ATM.

Do credit cards really give the best exchange rate?

Yes — almost always. Visa and Mastercard convert near the mid-market rate with a 0-1% spread, and the only real variable is your issuer's 0-3% foreign-transaction fee. A no-fx-fee card costs about 0.5% — $5.00 per $1,000 versus $114.41 at the airport kiosk. Ask your bank for a "no foreign transaction fee" card before you fly and keep the entire difference.

What is dynamic currency conversion (DCC) and why refuse it?

At a card terminal or foreign ATM the screen may offer to charge you in dollars instead of the local currency — a trap: the merchant's bank applies its own 5-12% exchange markup on top of every other fee, making it the worst option of 2026, worse than the airport kiosk. Always choose to be charged in the local currency and decline the conversion offer no matter how convenient it looks; that convenience costs roughly a tenth of the amount.

Is the local ATM actually cheaper than a bank?

On rate, yes — ATMs deal at the mid-market rate with zero spread, so you pay only flat fees: $2-5 to your bank plus $3-5 to the local operator, about $6 in our model (0.6% on $1,000). But flat fees do not scale: on a $100 withdrawal they are 6%. Withdraw one large amount instead of ten small ones, and decline if the screen offers the operator's own conversion rate.

Should I exchange cash before I fly?

A small starter amount only ($100-200) for arrival and transport: order it from your bank at a 1-3% spread plus a $0-10 fee, 1-3 business days ahead. Converting the whole trip before departure means carrying a large cash balance (risk) at a worse cost than a card, while the destination ATM deals at no spread at all. Start small and put the rest on a no-fx-fee card.

What about the AED and other pegged currencies?

The dirham has been pegged to the dollar at 3.67 since 1997, so the rate itself never moves — but that does not abolish the spreads: a Dubai airport kiosk applies 8-15% like anywhere else, and hotels can charge more. The rule is identical: a no-fx-fee card or an ATM for cash, and always pay in dirhams rather than dollars at the terminal — the peg protects the rate, not you, from DCC.

How do I see through the kiosk's "0% commission" sign?

The spread IS the commission — just under another name. Ask one question: "How many dollars will I hand you, and how much local currency will I receive?" Then compare the received amount against the mid-market rate: if the gap exceeds 3%, you are looking at a disguised commission. A "0% commission" sign with an 11% spread means $110 gone per $1,000 — the printed number is not what matters; the gap between the two amounts is.

Does the spread differ by currency (JPY, MXN, EUR)?

The method matters more than the pair: card and ATM land near the mid-market rate on every currency. But kiosk spreads widen for less-liquid currencies — Mexican pesos can hit 15%+ versus roughly 8% for euros — and the yen adds a quirk: large note denominations make kiosks refuse to buy back your small notes on the way home. Our example rates (EUR 0.92, JPY 150, AED 3.67) are 2026 planning midpoints, not live quotes.
