Kalkylator: Lap Infant vs Seat

An international round trip at $800 for the adult: the lap infant costs about $140 — $80 (10% of the fare) plus roughly $60 in route taxes, charged only on international infant tickets — versus $800 to buy the seat (100% of the fare, no child discount on any of the six airlines). The lap saves about $660. Domestically the lap is entirely free ($0), saving the full fare ($800). The honesty line: the FAA strongly recommends an approved seat for every child under 2 — the lap saves money, the seat buys protection against turbulence.

Route type

Taxes land only on international infant tickets: the domestic lap infant pays $0, while the international lap ticket (10% of the adult fare) also carries the same route taxes and fees as any paid ticket — typically $30-120 round trip, modeled here at $60.

Adult fare (round trip)

Internationally the lap fee is 10% × $800 = $80 + about $60 in route taxes.

Airline

Delta: Free in a domestic lap; international lap = 10% of the adult fare plus taxes. Bassinets on long-haul widebodies (767/330/350), request at booking. Stroller plus car seat gate-check free.

Trip length (for the car-seat rental)

Gate-checking your own seat is free — rental only enters the math if you pick it below.

Car seat

Car-seat check: gate-checking a car seat or stroller is free on all six airlines and never counts against your bag allowance. Only an FAA-approved seat (look for the certification label) may be used in a purchased seat, and it must go in a window seat next to the parent.

The honesty line: savings are not safety

The honesty line: the FAA strongly recommends that children under 2 fly in their own seat secured in an FAA-approved car seat — a lap infant is legal and cheap, but an adult's arms cannot restrain a baby against turbulence, and turbulence injuries are the leading cause of in-flight injury. This calculator shows the savings without pretending the two options are equivalent on safety.

Only an FAA-approved seat (look for the certification label) may be used in a purchased seat, and it must go in a window seat next to the parent. · Bassinet rules: free but first-come — reserve at booking or right after, because each widebody has only a handful of bulkhead bassinet positions. Long-haul widebody aircraft only, weight limits run about 20-25 lb (9-11 kg), and the infant must still be held during takeoff, landing and turbulence.

Vanliga frågor

Do babies fly free on US domestic flights in 2026?

Yes: a lap infant (under 2, on an adult's lap) pays $0 on domestic routes across Delta, United, American and Southwest — but you must add the infant to the reservation (by phone or at a ticket office on some carriers) and bring proof of age such as a birth certificate, which gate agents can ask for. On a domestic round trip that is the entire seat fare saved versus buying the seat.

How much is the international lap infant fee?

10% of the applicable adult fare plus the full taxes and fees of a real ticket — the near-universal 2026 rule at Delta, United, American, Emirates and Qatar Airways. On an $800 international fare: $80 lap charge + roughly $60 route taxes ($30-120 depending on the itinerary) = about $140 total. The US carriers compute the 10% off the fare paid; Emirates and Qatar off the applicable fare at ticketing.

Does a lap infant pay airport taxes?

Domestically, nothing at all — the fee is zero. Internationally, yes: the 10% lap ticket carries the same route taxes and fees as any ticket — departure and arrival taxes, fuel surcharges and airport fees, typically $30-120 round trip depending on routing and connections. That is why the international lap total is not just 10% but 10% plus taxes.

Is it safe to fly with a baby on your lap?

It is legal, but the FAA strongly recommends that every child under 2 fly in their own seat secured in an FAA-approved car seat — an adult's arms cannot restrain an infant against sudden turbulence, and turbulence is the leading cause of in-flight injuries. The honest summary: the lap saves money, the seat buys protection, and the official recommendation is the seat.

Can I bring a car seat on the plane for my baby?

Only in a seat you purchased for the infant, and only if the car seat is FAA-approved (look for the printed certification label) — placed in a window seat. If the baby flies as a lap infant you cannot use the car seat in flight, but you can gate-check it free on all six airlines without counting against your bag allowance — strollers likewise.

What are the rules for airplane bassinets?

Bassinets are free but first-come: each widebody has only a handful of bulkrow bassinet positions, so request one at booking or immediately after. They exist on long-haul widebody aircraft only (not regional domestic jets), carry weight limits of about 20-25 lb (9-11 kg), and the infant must still be held during takeoff, landing and any turbulence. Emirates and Qatar Airways are among the best equipped.

Which airline is best for flying with an infant?

Domestically, Southwest is the most flexible: free lap infant on every route it flies, open seating with family boarding between the A and B groups, and it allows a car seat in a spare seat when one is free. Internationally, Emirates and Qatar Airways: the same 10% + taxes lap fee as the rest, but bassinets are standard on every widebody and family service is top-rated. Delta, United and American lead transatlantic/transpacific routes with 767/777/787/330/350 bassinets.

Is there a discount for buying a seat for a baby?

Practically none in 2026: a seat for an under-2 costs 100% of the adult fare on all six airlines — no infant or child discount — with rare exceptions (short promos, or some award bookings that reduce only the infant taxes). So the math is blunt: seat = full fare + car-seat rental if you do not bring your own (rentals run $10-25/day, modeled at $15). The cheapest legal option domestically remains the $0 lap infant.
