Kalkylator: US Tourist SIM & eSIM

For a 14-day US trip with a 6GB need, the cheapest 2026 option is a T-Mobile prepaid 8GB tier: $35 all-in ($25 plan + $10 SIM kit, often waived in-store) — just $2.50/day. The close runner-up: a travel eSIM with a 10GB pack at $40 ($2.86/day) — only $5 more for zero store visits, if you install the QR before you fly. Home roaming, meanwhile, bills $175 for the trip ($12.50/day) — 5.0× the winner, and exactly how the trap works.

Best value (14 days · 6GB)$35 — T-Mobile ($2.50/day)
Close runner-up — travel eSIM$40 (10GB pack, $2.86/day)
Home roaming — the trap$175 ($12.50/day, 5.0×)
Golden ruleInstall the eSIM QR before you fly; never buy at the airport kiosk

Trip days (1-30)

Prepaid plans are valid 30 days — one month covers any 1-30 day trip, so a shorter stay does not shrink the prepaid price.

Your data need

Maps all day, socials, music streaming, some video. The typical tourist profile — plan 5-10GB.

Home operator (for the roaming comparison)

US roaming bundles run $10-15/day — we compute at the $12.50 midpoint. Home-operator US roaming bundles run $10-15/day (midpoint $12.50). Works with zero setup — and that convenience is exactly how a 2-week trip quietly becomes a $175 phone bill.

Default scenario: 14 days · medium 6GB · KSA bundle — edit inputs
14 days · 6GB — best value
$35
US prepaid SIM (T-Mobile prepaid)
≈ $2.50/day
≈ 131 SAR (pegged rate)
prepaid = carrier's smallest tier covering your GB + $10 SIM kit (plan valid 30 days, covers any trip of 1-30 days) · eSIM = cheaper of (smallest data pack covering your GB) or ($6.50/day × days) · roaming = $12.50/day × days · verdict = cheapest of the three, with per-day = total ÷ trip days.
1 — US prepaid physical SIM (activate in town)CHEAPEST$35
T-Mobile prepaid — 8GB tier $25 + kit $10
$35 ← best
AT&T prepaid — 16GB tier $40 + kit $10
$50
Verizon prepaid — 15GB tier $35 + kit $10
$45

SIM kits run about $10 at carrier stores, Target and Walmart — often waived when you activate in a T-Mobile or AT&T store, so the real range is $0-10. Airport kiosk kits are a different story: see the trap note below. — The Connect-style entry tier is the visitor value pick: about $15 for 5GB (the old $25/3GB era is gone). No SSN or US credit needed in-store; activation takes minutes.

2 — travel eSIM$40
Data pack: 10GB pack $40 ($2.86/day)
$40
Daily alternative (pricier here): $6.50/day × 14 days = $91
$91

2026 data-pack band: 3GB ~$18, 5GB ~$26, 10GB ~$40, 20GB ~$60 (Airalo/Saily/Nomad territory). Validity typically 30 days — matches any 1-30 day trip.

Install tip: Install the eSIM QR code at home BEFORE you fly — buy, scan, and stash the plan in your phone's eSIM slots with data off, then flip roaming-for-that-line on only after landing. Install fails (QR errors, device limits) are far easier to fix on your sofa than in a jetlagged arrivals hall with dead data.
3 — home roamingTHE TRAP$175
KSA operator bundle (STC / Mobily / Zain) — $12.50/day × 14 days
$175

That is 5.0× the winner — The classic trap: a $10-12/day 'travel pass' from your home operator. Two weeks = $140-175 for the same GB a $40 eSIM gives you — and pay-per-MB roamers who left data on have returned to $500+ bills. Turn data roaming OFF before you board.

The prepaid beats the eSIM by only about $5 — if you want zero store visits, the eSIM is the very close convenience pick (install it before you fly).
Airport 'tourist SIM' kiosks sell the same $15-40 prepaid plans for $60-100. Never buy at the kiosk: walk to a carrier store in town, a Target/Walmart, or install a travel eSIM over the free airport Wi-Fi instead.
Coverage honesty: Verizon has the best rural reach (national parks, interstates, small towns), T-Mobile is fastest and densest inside cities, AT&T sits balanced in between — solid in parks and metros alike. Sub-brands ride the same towers for less (Metro on T-Mobile, Cricket on AT&T, Visible on Verizon). Pick by WHERE you go, not by ads.

Vanliga frågor

eSIM or physical prepaid SIM for a US visitor?

A travel eSIM installs from a QR code at home before you fly and switches on the moment you land — zero store visits, and it leaves the physical slot free for your home SIM (bank OTPs still arrive). The physical prepaid SIM is cheaper per GB on longer trips (about $35 for an 8GB tier with the kit vs $40 for a 10GB eSIM in 2026) but costs you a carrier-store or Target/Walmart trip plus an English activation. Rule of thumb: short trip or you prize convenience → eSIM; two weeks or more and cheapest-possible → the physical SIM.

What is the cheapest option for a 2-week US trip?

For 14 days at medium usage (6GB): a T-Mobile prepaid 8GB tier at about $25 + $10 SIM kit (often waived in-store) = $35 total, or $2.50/day — the cheapest play. The close runner-up: a 10GB travel eSIM at about $40 ($2.86/day), only $5 more for zero hassle. And if you can hold usage to 5GB, the $26 eSIM pack beats everything. Home roaming, by contrast, runs about $175 — 5x the winner.

Is 5GB enough for a US trip?

For maps, messaging, email and booking apps: yes, comfortably. Google Maps burns roughly 5MB per 10km of navigation and WhatsApp is negligible — figure 140-350MB/day depending on how much you roam. What kills a plan is video (YouTube ~500MB-1GB/hour), downloading whole map regions, and app updates on cellular. Lean on hotel Wi-Fi for updates and evening streaming, and 5GB genuinely covers a light two-week trip.

Why is my home operator's $10/day roaming a trap?

Because the typical 'travel pass' from KSA/UAE operators costs $10-15 per day: two weeks = $140-175 for the same gigabytes a $40 eSIM pack gives you. Worse is leaving data roaming on with no bundle at all on pay-per-MB rates — travelers have come home to $500+ bills from one week of maps and social apps. Switch data roaming OFF before boarding and decide deliberately after landing.

Which US carrier actually has the best coverage — honestly?

There is no single winner: Verizon has the widest rural reach — the pick for national-park road trips, interstates and small towns. T-Mobile is fastest and densest inside major cities (NYC, LA, Chicago) but thins out beyond them. AT&T sits balanced in between — decent in metros and solid-to-good in parks. Sub-brands ride the same towers for less (Metro on T-Mobile, Cricket on AT&T, Visible on Verizon). Choose by where you are actually going, not by ads.

Does hotspot / tethering work on these plans?

US prepaid plans generally allow hotspot from the same data bucket (an 8GB T-Mobile tier: all 8GB shareable) at no extra charge — but 'unlimited' tiers typically cap hotspot speed at around 5GB then throttle. Travel eSIMs mostly allow tethering, not all: some daily 'unlimited' plans block it or choke the speed. The rule: read the listing before buying — a tethering/hotspot line is always there.

Should I buy a SIM at the US airport kiosk?

Never. Airport 'tourist SIM' kiosks in the US sell the same $15-40 prepaid plans for $60-100, often on slow sub-network MVNOs. The alternatives: a T-Mobile or AT&T store in town (10 minutes from most hotels), Target or Walmart (prepaid kits at list price), or easiest of all — install a travel eSIM right in the arrivals hall over the free airport Wi-Fi while you wait for your bag.

How do I keep my home number active while using a US SIM/eSIM?

Modern phones are dual-SIM: install the US data eSIM and keep your home physical SIM in the slot, disable 'data roaming' only on the home line and leave SMS reception on — verification codes arrive normally with zero roaming-data fees. Calls? Forward them or use WhatsApp over the eSIM data. Google Voice (a free permanent US number) must be set up while you are in the US, and is a great option for repeat visitors.
