How to Plan a Trip Budget That Actually Holds Up
On this page
Every trip budget has four blocks
Hotels, food, local transport, and activities. Guessing them as one lump sum is why budgets fail: they move independently — food prices track your eating style, transport tracks your itinerary density, and hotels track season. Price each block separately, then add them up.
Size hotels from real ranges, not averages
"Average hotel price" hides a 5× spread between budget and luxury tiers in the same city. Decide your tier first, then look up that tier's range for your exact dates. Our destination tools list per-night price tiers for dozens of cities so you can anchor on numbers instead of vibes — Medina Hotel Prices — All Tiers per Night, for instance, breaks Medina into per-night budget tiers.
The two buffers everyone skips
First: a 15–20% contingency on the total, because something always costs more than planned. Second: arrival-day cash — airport transfers, SIM cards, and the first dinner reliably blow through unadjusted budgets before the trip even starts.
Turn the plan into a daily allowance
Divide the post-buffer total by nights and travelers. One number in your pocket beats a spreadsheet you will not reopen mid-trip: if today spends tomorrow's allowance, you know immediately.
