AliExpress VAT-at-Checkout Checker — Were You Charged Twice?

Quick answer

Did AliExpress already collect your VAT (15% in Saudi, 5% in UAE…) at checkout, or will the courier demand it again at your door?

  • Answer four quick questions

Figures are estimates from this calculator’s standard formula — adjust the inputs in the tool below for your exact number.

How the checker works

We apply your country’s VAT-collection scheme (who must collect it: the store at checkout or customs at the border) to your four answers, and tell you who owes the tax and what to do if it was charged twice.

  1. 1

    Pick your country

Every country has its own scheme: Saudi 15% collected at checkout up to SAR 1,000, UAE 5% up to AED 300, UK 20% up to £135, and the EU under IOSS up to €150.

  2. 2

    Enter the order total

Goods + shipping in your currency — this number decides whether the parcel is inside the pre-collection scheme or clears at the border.

  3. 3

    Answer the two questions

Did checkout show a VAT line? Did the courier demand it at delivery? Your two answers settle the verdict.

  4. 4

    Read the verdict and steps

You get a clear verdict (already collected / due at the border / double-charged), estimated amounts and ready recovery steps when needed.

FAQs

Does AliExpress collect Saudi VAT in advance?

Yes, for small orders: under ZATCA’s e-store scheme, 15% VAT is collected at checkout on consignments up to SAR 1,000 (goods + shipping). Above that the shipment clears at the border (≈5% duty + 15% VAT) via the courier.

I paid VAT at checkout and the courier charged it again — what now?

That is a recoverable double charge: collect the order invoice and the courier receipt, ask the courier to refund the wrongly-collected tax, then open a chat/dispute with AliExpress with proof of both payments — they typically reimburse the second collection. The tool above gives detailed steps.

Why isn’t VAT collected at checkout for some countries?

Pre-collection requires a specific arrangement between the country and the store (like Saudi ZATCA or the EU’s IOSS). Countries with no verified arrangement with AliExpress — e.g. Jordan, Egypt, Morocco — collect tax at customs clearance, and the tool says so honestly instead of guessing.

Are the amounts shown official?

No — they are estimates based on your order total (goods + shipping). The declared customs value, the official HS duty rate and the courier’s receipt are the final word; the tool labels every figure as an estimate.
