Running Calories – Distance & Speed Calculator

Quick answer

This calculator computes calories burned running by distance, speed and body weight.

  • MET-based estimates from easy 8 km/h jogs to 16 km/h tempo runs, in metric and miles.

Figures are estimates from this calculator’s standard formula — adjust the inputs in the tool below for your exact number.

How Running Calories Are Calculated

kcal = MET × kg × hours; running METs: 8.3 (8 km/h), 9.8 (10 km/h), 11.8 (12.5 km/h), 14.5 (14.5 km/h)

Running burns calories in proportion to body weight, distance covered and speed — and the MET system captures all three. Each pace maps to a metabolic equivalent: an 8 km/h jog is 8.3 METs, a 10 km/h run 9.8 METs, a 12.5 km/h tempo run 11.8 METs and a 14.5 km/h threshold effort 14.5 METs. Multiply by weight and hours for the burn. Worked example: a 70 kg runner covering 8 km in 48 minutes at 10 km/h burns 9.8 × 70 × 0.8 = 549 kcal — about 69 kcal per kilometer. The same runner jogging those 8 km at 8 km/h burns 485 kcal over an hour. That per-km figure (roughly 1 kcal per kg per km) is a handy cross-check for any distance.

  1. 1

    Enter the run

Distance and time — or distance and planned pace

  2. 2

    Enter body weight

Weight scales every calorie estimate linearly

  3. 3

    Read the burn

Total kcal, kcal/km and per-mile equivalents

Use Cases

Fueling long runs

A 90-minute long run at 65–70% effort burns 850–1,100 kcal — plan gels for anything past 75 minutes

Race-day budgeting

A half marathon costs a 75 kg runner about 1,150 kcal — breakfast matters

Treadmill sessions

Convert treadmill km/h into MET burn for indoor workouts

Tips

  • 1

Use net burn (subtract ~1 kcal/kg/hour of resting cost) for strict diet math

  • 2

Hills add 10–20% — adjust manually for hilly routes

  • 3

Calories per km ≈ your weight in kg — quick sanity check

Common Mistakes

  • Double-counting the workout in both food and fitness apps

  • Using the treadmill’s calorie display, which ignores your weight history settings

  • Assuming faster is always more: total burn depends on distance, not speed alone

  • Ignoring walking breaks, which still burn 4–5 METs

FAQs

How many calories does a 5 km run burn?

Roughly 300–360 kcal: a 70 kg runner at 10 km/h burns 9.8 × 70 × 0.5 = 343 kcal in 30 minutes.

Do I burn more running faster or longer?

Per minute, faster burns more (14.5 METs at 14.5 km/h vs 9.8 at 10 km/h), but per kilometer the burn is nearly constant — about 1 kcal per kg.

How many calories does a marathon burn?

A 70 kg finisher burns roughly 2,900–3,100 kcal over 42.2 km — about 1 kcal per kg per km plus intensity drift.

Is running better than walking for fat loss?

Per kilometer they are close (walking just takes longer); per hour running burns 60–80% more.

Why does my watch say fewer calories than this?

Watches subtract resting calories to report net burn; this calculator shows gross — subtract about 70–90 kcal per hour for net.
