Greenhouse Ventilation – CFM per m²

Quick answer

Ventilation CFM = volume × ACH ÷ 60.

  • Greenhouse fan and vent sizing from air changes per hour (60 summer) with inlet area and CFM/m² checks.

Figures are estimates from this calculator’s standard formula — adjust the inputs in the tool below for your exact number.

How the Greenhouse Ventilation Calculator Works

Required CFM = greenhouse volume (ft³) × ACH ÷ 60; m³/h = volume × ACH; inlet area ≈ fan area × 1.5

Summer ventilation replaces the whole air volume every minute (60 ACH); winter humidity control needs only 2–4 ACH. Volume is floor × average height — for a 9 × 30 m tunnel with 4 m peak and 2.5 m walls, average height ≈ 3.2 m: volume = 864 m³. At 60 ACH: 51,840 m³/h ≈ 30,500 CFM — 10.5 CFM per ft² of floor, right for warm climates. Match inlet area to 1.5× fan outlet area and stage fans with thermostats 2°C apart. Worked check: a single 50-inch box fan (17,500 CFM) plus two 36-inch (2 × 10,700) gives 38,900 CFM for this tunnel at high stage.

  1. 1

    Step 1

Enter dimensions; the tool computes volume with average height.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Pick ACH: 60 summer cooling, 30 shoulder season, 2–4 winter humidity.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Read total CFM and m³/h plus CFM per m² of floor.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Verify inlet area at 1.5× fan area.

Use Cases

Choosing exhaust fans for a new tunnel

Diagnosing heat and humidity buildup in an existing house

Sizing insect-screened inlets correctly

Staging fans for shoulder-season control

Tips

  • 1

60 ACH = one air change per minute for summer

  • 2

Inlets ≥ 1.5× fan outlet area, spread along the wall

  • 3

Stage fans 2°C apart to avoid on-off shock

  • 4

HAF fans mix; exhaust fans exchange — you need both

Common Mistakes

  • Computing volume with wall height instead of average height

  • Insect mesh on undersized inlets doubling static pressure

  • One huge fan instead of staged smaller fans — no low-speed option

  • No circulation fans: air stratifies even with correct exchange

FAQs

How many CFM per square meter for greenhouse ventilation?

Summer design runs 45–60 m³/h per m² of floor (about 8–10 CFM/ft²). A 270 m² tunnel therefore needs roughly 12,000–16,000 m³/h (7,100–9,400 CFM) of continuous exhaust.

What ACH does a greenhouse need in winter?

2–4 air changes per hour — enough to exhaust humidity without chilling crops. Summer cooling uses 60 ACH; the gap is why staged or variable-speed fans matter.

How do I size the inlet area?

At least 1.5× the fan outlet area, distributed along the opposite wall. Starved inlets raise static pressure and cut fan output 20–40% — add mesh area when using insect screen.

Roll-up sides or fans?

Roll-up sides give cheap passive exchange on warm, windy days but nothing in calm heat; fan systems guarantee the design air change regardless of weather. Many tunnels use both — sides for mild days, fans for peaks.

Why add horizontal airflow fans?

Exhaust fans exchange air with outside; HAF fans mix inside air, eliminating hot and humid pockets. Two HAF fans per bay at 50–75 fpm air movement cut disease and even out growth.
