Lumber Calculator – Board Feet & 2×4 Count

Lumber is traded in board feet: one board foot is 144 in³ (1 in thick × 12 in wide × 12 in long), so the total is thickness × width × length (inches) ÷ 144, times the piece count. The calculator works in nominal sizes but flags the actual milled dimensions - a 2×4 arrives at 38 × 89 mm (1.5 × 3.5 in) and a 2×12 at 38 × 286 mm. Worked example: ten 16 ft 2×12 boards equal (2 × 12 × 16 ÷ 144) × 10 = 26.7 board feet; at 2.5-3 lb per board foot dried softwood, that is a manageable, checkable order. For wall framing, remember that 16 in (40 cm) on-center spacing means one stud per 40 cm of wall plus corners, openings and commons.
