Three-Phase Power Calculator (kW/kVA)

Quick answer

Enter line voltage, current, and power factor for instant kW, kVA, and kVAR in star or delta systems, with motor full-load current tables and correction sizing.

Figures are estimates from this calculator’s standard formula — adjust the inputs in the tool below for your exact number.

How Does the Three-Phase Power Calculator Work?

P = √3 × VL × IL × cos φ

Three-phase power packs three sine waves 120 degrees apart, delivering constant power to motors and transformers. Active power P = root3 x VL x IL x cos phi; apparent S = root3 x VL x IL; reactive Q = root3 x VL x IL x sin phi. Example: a 400 V motor drawing 22 A at PF 0.85 produces P = 1.732 x 400 x 22 x 0.85 = 12.96 kW, S = 15.24 kVA, Q = 8 kVAR - data that sizes the feeder, breaker, and correction caps at once. Transformer sizing follows directly: a 75 kVA transformer at 400 V carries 108 A per line, so a 100 A feeder is undersized - the power result feeds straight into equipment selection.

  1. 1

    Enter line voltage

    E.g. 400 V line-to-line.

  2. 2

    Enter line current

    Measured or nameplate amps.

  3. 3

    Enter power factor

    cos phi of the load.

Use Cases

Sizing feeders and breakers for motor control centers

Verifying energy bills with clamp-meter measurements

Specifying transformer kVA for mixed industrial loads

Common Mistakes

  • Using 230 V (phase) instead of 400 V (line) and undershooting by root3

  • Leaving efficiency out of motor current calculations

  • Forgetting the 0.866 factor when converting between star and delta phase values

FAQs

How do I calculate kVA from kW?

kVA = kW/cos phi. A 15 kW motor at PF 0.85 draws 17.6 kVA. Utilities size transformers and demand charges on kVA, which is why poor PF costs money even at unchanged kW.

What current does a 15 kW 400 V motor draw?

I = P/(root3 x V x PF x efficiency). With PF 0.85 and efficiency 0.92: I = 15000/(1.732 x 400 x 0.85 x 0.92) = 27.7 A. NEC table 430 lists 28.5 A for this class - size conductors from the table.

Star or delta - does it change the power?

Not the electrical power for the same line quantities: P = root3 VL IL cos phi holds either way. What changes is phase current: in delta each winding carries IL/root3, in star IL itself.

How do I measure power factor without instruments?

Clock the meter: count disc revolutions or pulse LEDs over time with known loads. If a 2 kW heater runs the meter at exactly its kh rating but a motor at 2 kW runs 17 percent faster, the PF is 1/1.17 = 0.85.
