Asphalt Calculator – Tons by Area × Depth

Asphalt is sold by the ton, and the conversion is one constant: hot mix densities run 2.3 t/m³, so tonnes = area × depth(cm) × 0.023. In imperial the same math gives 0.011 t per ft² at 2 in. Order 5% extra for compaction loss (a 5 cm compacted layer starts as 5.5 cm loose) and lay driveways in 5 cm lifts. Worked example: a 100 m² driveway at 5 cm needs 11.5 t - a single 12 t truck compacting down to about 4.5 cm finished. Residential driveways want 2 layers over 15 cm of base: 4 cm base course plus 3 cm wearing course. The surface is drivable in 24-48 h but full cure takes 6-12 months.
