Shipping Cost Calculator – Per Package Rate

Quick answer

Shipping = base charge + weight × rate.

  • 8 lb zone 2 at $5.50 + $0.95/lb = $13.10.
  • Compare carrier quotes fast.

Figures are estimates from this calculator’s standard formula — adjust the inputs in the tool below for your exact number.

How Per-Package Shipping Cost Works

Shipping Cost = Base Charge + (Weight × Rate per lb) + Surcharges

Carriers build a parcel price from a base charge for the service level, a per-pound rate that grows with distance zone, and surcharges for fuel, residential delivery or oversized boxes. Worked example: an 8 lb package to zone 2 at a $5.50 base plus $0.95/lb bills 5.50 + 8 × 0.95 = $13.10. The same parcel to zone 8 runs near $24. Weigh accurately and watch billable weight — carriers charge the greater of actual and dimensional weight (L×W×H ÷ 166 domestic).

FAQs

What is dimensional weight?

Size-based billing weight: L×W×H in inches ÷ 166 (domestic); you pay whichever of actual vs dimensional is higher.

Which zone is cheapest?

Zone 1-2 (0-150 miles) — rates climb step by step to zone 8 (very long distance).

Why did my invoice exceed the quote?

Fuel surcharges, residential fees and measurement corrections after carrier audits.

Flat-rate vs weight pricing?

Flat-rate boxes win for dense heavy items under ~20 lb; standard pricing wins for light bulky ones.
