AliExpress Category Trust Norms — Is 96.8% Good for This Category?

Quick answer

The same rating means different things in electronics vs phone cases.

  • Paste an AliExpress product link and see its rating and sales as a percentile among

Figures are estimates from this calculator’s standard formula — adjust the inputs in the tool below for your exact number.

How the Category Trust Norms tool works

Percentile = (peers strictly below + half of ties) ÷ sample size × 100

AliExpress publishes no official per-category rating benchmark, so we build the comparison from a live sample: we fetch the product via the Partner API, then search for similar products using its title keywords (the listings buyers actually see in the same niche — in practice, the same category). We then compute the product's percentile for both rating and sales among that sample: 85% means it beats 85% of similar listings. We also show the sample's median rating and median sales — i.e. "what's normal here". Below 10 comparable listings we show "insufficient sample" rather than a noisy number. The result is a live estimate, not an official statistic — and we say so.

Use Cases

An electronics item at 96.8% positive — above most of its competitors, or just an ordinary number for its section?

A new product with few orders: is its sales volume actually notable against its rivals?

Comparing two variants of the same product: which one is genuinely stronger inside its niche.

Common Mistakes

  • Reading a rating in isolation from its category: 93% can be excellent in some sections and poor in others.

  • Assuming high sales volume always means quality — it may just mean a very low price.

  • Ignoring the sample size: a percentile built on 3 products means nothing, which is why we withhold it below 10.

FAQs

Where do the "category norms" come from?

Not from AliExpress — there is no published official per-category rating benchmark. We build the comparison from a live sample: a similarity search on your product's title returns listings from effectively the same niche, and we compute the product's percentile among them. The result is a live estimate that changes with the sample, and we always show how many listings it is based on.

How is this different from the Review Credibility Proxy?

The credibility proxy asks: is the rating number itself statistically believable (a confidence interval given the sample size)? This tool asks: even if the number is real, is it good compared with the product's competitors in the same category? Use both for the fullest picture.

Why does it sometimes say "insufficient sample"?

When fewer than 10 similar listings carry a comparable number. A percentile built on 3 products is statistical noise, not information — we prefer telling the truth to inventing a number.

Does the result mean the product is "good" or "bad"?

No. The percentile only describes where the product sits among its competitors: "below most competitors" in a category where every rating is high can still be a perfectly fine product. The percentile is comparison context, not a quality verdict.

How many AliExpress API calls does one check use?

At most two: the product details fetch (shared with our other tools via a 1-hour cache) and one similar-products search (cached 6 hours and shared across repeat checks of the same product). The buy button uses the plain product URL — no extra call.
