AliExpress Shipping Insurance Value Check

Quick answer

Is the courier "insurance" add-on worth it for an SAR 80 item?

  • Enter the item value, the add-on price and your expected loss/damage rate: we compute the

Figures are estimates from this calculator’s standard formula — adjust the inputs in the tool below for your exact number.

How the shipping-insurance value check works

Expected value = loss rate × payout amount

Insurance is an expected-value bet: you pay a fixed price today for a possible payout if the parcel is lost or damaged. We multiply the loss rate you choose by the payout (item value × payout rate — many add-ons refund the item only) to get the expected payout, then compare it with the insurance price: clearly higher → worth it, clearly lower → skip, in between → your hassle tolerance decides.

FAQs

Doesn't AliExpress Buyer Protection already cover loss?

Largely yes: AliExpress's Money-Back Guarantee refunds orders that never arrive or arrive damaged / not as described, regardless of any extra insurance. That's why our default rate is conservative (0.5%) — what the courier add-on really adds is mostly coverage for loss after the parcel is marked "delivered", and a faster claim path than a dispute.

Where do the preset loss rates come from?

General editorial assumptions, not official figures: 0.1% if you consider Buyer Protection enough, 0.5% for ordinary orders, 2% for breakable electronics, 5% for very fragile goods. Tune them to your experience with the courier in your country — the whole calculation depends on the number you choose.

Why would an insurance add-on pay out less than the item value?

Many terms refund the item only, excluding shipping and fees, and some cap the payout or deduct an administrative fee when you claim. If you know the add-on's terms, set the payout rate to match them for a more accurate expected value.

When is the answer "borderline" and what should I do?

When the expected value is close to the insurance price (between two-thirds and one-and-a-half times it). The math doesn't decide then — your situation does: if the order matters and you'd hate a dispute, take it; if it's a trivial amount, skip the add-on and carry the risk.
